EU membership helps environment

A key report by the Environmental Audit Committee in Parliament has shown that the UK’s environment has benefited enormously from EU membership.

The report cites cleaner beaches, lower air pollution and big increases in recycling rates as key benefits.

Friends of the Earth welcomed the report, saying the UK's environment is "best served working together with European partners".

The EU has also helped encourage more fuel efficient cars, a reduction in the amount of waste going into landfill and encouraged policies to support bio-diversity. The report showed that the UK has a good record of influencing our EU partners so that we have had a positive impact on pollution and climate change across Europe.

“Voting to Remain in the EU is an effective way to ensure the UK’s environment continue to benefit,” said Lib Dem Layla Moran.
