Oxfordshire Liberal Democrats welcome Tory U-turn over 2021 election suspension

Fans of democracy were delighted on Tuesday when Conservative County Council Leader Ian Hudspeth made a dramatic u-turn and dropped his proposal to lobby for the cancellation of next year's local elections.

Liberal Democrats made a number of strong points in defence of local democracy during the debate at full council. They were supported by 239 local residents who’d signed a petition in advance of the debate.

Liberal Democrat County Council Group Leader Richard Webber thanked those that had signed to show their concerns and added:

“If the Conservatives at Westminster want to reorganise local government at a time of national crisis then we would have to engage with that process and the best way for the people of Oxfordshire to have a strong voice in that debate is to be represented by councillors they've chosen at the ballot box.

"Cancelling the elections would have simply protected those currently in power way beyond their mandate and not given the people a voice in this crucial debate to determine the future of local government in our county.

"It is unfortunate it took considerable public criticism for the Conservatives to finally recognise this would be wrong, but I’m glad they’ve made this climb down."
