I would like to go up to some of these rough sleepers and
say ‘you are a disgrace’ - Labour's John Tanner
A senior Labour City Councillor is under fire for lashing out at Oxford’s rough sleepers.
Labour’s Clean Spaces Executive Member, John Tanner, said that homeless people are “a real blight, people don’t want to see rough sleepers all over the place.”
He went on to say: “I would like to go up to some of these rough sleepers and say ‘you are a disgrace’.”
This comes after the City’s ruling Labour Party introduced a fine of up to £1,000 on the homeless in Oxford, with the aim of shifting the problem out of central Oxford and out of sight.
Local Liberal Democrat and homelessness campaigner, Lucinda Chamberlain, said:
“Oxford’s homeless are some of the most vulnerable in our community. They need our help, not our hate.
“Oxford Labour is increasingly arrogant and think they can do whatever they like.
“Labour’s approach seems to be to try and push the homeless out of sight, rather than tackling the underlying causes or showing any humanity.”
