Day 8 - Q. What do you think the shortcomings of the PCCs legislation are, in terms of scrutiny and governance? What would you suggest to the Home Secretary that might improve those aspects?
A. The panels aren’t visible and panel members do not report back annually to their councils. I would prefer a model like the former police authorities with wider representation than just one politician form the majority party in each council.
There will need to be a review if other emergency services become part of the PCC role, which is the current Home Secretary's plan. I reject the Labour notion of un-elected Commissioners borrowed by the Conservatives in the coalition for the Regional School Commissioners that are unelected and largely unaccountable.
Law and order does need accountability as it is has huge effects on the lives of individuals and their families.
