Day 11 - Q. What is your opinion of the use of numerical targets monitoring crime and community safety?
Labour’s target driven policing in the first decade of the century led to more than 3,000 under-18s receiving custodial sentences; the number of under-18s now in custody is around 1000.
I have spent much of my career working with data (see my education blog at johonhowson.wordpress.com for examples). Data allows challenging questions about priorities and the use of resources to be discussed in a manner that can be helpful.
For example, I am interested in knowing why Oxford is second nationally to Cambridge for cycle theft but there is a much lower detection rate in Oxford.
