John Howson will be the Lib Dem candidate for the Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections due to be held in May 2021. As a sitting County Councillor and a former senior Magistrate, Professor Howson is well qualified for the role.
The current Conservative PCC, Anthony Stansfield is standing down after nine years of cuts to police numbers and failure to hit targets. He hit the headlines last year after admitting that he had used his work email to warn a private citizen of police action. Stansfeld also faced criticism three years ago when he appointed a Conservative council leader to be his deputy, paid for by the taxpayer.
Professor John Howson said .“I am delighted to have been chosen to be the Lib Dem candidate for this role. It is high time we had a PCC focused on the real priorities facing local communities and who understands that they have to be fully and publicly accountable for their actions.”
John is already actively holding the current PCC to account. He has highlighted the failure of Thames Valley Police to hit its own target to reduce knife crime. He is supporting the campaign to end suspicion-less ‘stop and search’. Black people are 47 times more likely to be subject to these searches than white people, John said, “There is a place for intelligence-led stop and search, but not for exacerbating racial tension in this way".
