Conservative councillors in Oxfordshire are proposing a delay to local elections due to take place in May 2021. This follows them losing swathes of seats in the 2019 local elections across the County.
Oxford City Council, Cherwell and West Oxfordshire, Police and Crime Commissioner elections, Neighbourhood Plan referendums and council by-elections have already been delayed by a year from 2020 to 2021 because of emergency Covid-19 legislation.
The plan to delay them again on suspicion of a possible review of Local Government reorganisation is not acceptable.
Conservative Councillors need to be held to account. We believe it is undemocratic and unacceptable to deprive people of their right to vote and select their local representatives.
Our councils are on the front line of the Covid-19 response and have a key role in supporting the local economy as well as providing essential services for residents. It is vital that voters are allowed to choose who makes the decisions that will affect us all during these uncertain times.
If re-organisation of local government is to take place, the Government must not suspend elections for two years to do so.
Local residents must be allowed to have their say. We should have the planned elections in 2021.
I/we the undersigned oppose the proposal to delay the elections in Oxfordshire planned for May 2021.
