Day 16 - Q. What is your experience of working with/negotiating with unions?
A. I think it is fair to say that at times in my career I have been on first name terms with all general secretaries of the main teacher associations.
I am used to working in high pressure situations, where opposing points of view are expressed and judgements need to be made. However, I am cautious of the PCC role here. I think if the PCC role expands across all emergency services then it is important that the right tone is set. Services must be able to work together, and as PCC I will do my best to facilitate this. There may be demarcation disputes between both officers and unions in developing new ways of working that need to be handled sensitively, but not ignored.
